I am very pleased to present to you the fourth issue of the Pan Arab
Journal of Neurosurgery. Our journal is fast establishing itself as
the official organ of neurosurgeons in the Arab world. Previous issues
have been extremely well received by the neurosurgical community,
and I have also received very encouraging reviews and comments from
our colleagues who are involved with established neurosurgical journals
in North America and Europe. As you know the ISSN number has already
been assigned to our journal and we continue to strive to improve
the standard of the scientific contributions. Our colleagues from
all over the world have promised their continued support with contributions,
which I am sure will help enhance the image of the specialty in the
region and promote state of the art scientific work.
As you all know, we are fast approaching the end of our first successful
century of the practice of neurosurgery, the third millennium is round
the corner. Neurosurgery will also be celebrating special milestones.
It will be the end of the first century of modern neurological surgery,
a surgery of splendid accomplishments leading to safe craniotomies
and routine spinal operations. A century of excised neoplasms and
clipped aneurysms. A century of pain relief and tremor control. A
century of neuroanaesthesia, neurocritical care, neurogenetics, etc.
and, of course, a century of computers and countless technical applications.
We are at the threshold of new discoveries in neurobiology with a
million promises of clinical applications awaiting neurosurgical genius.
We, in the Arab world have to stand up to the challenge that we face
in the third millennium. Efforts are being made to counter the advances
taking place in the rest of the scientific world. This journal is
a forum to keep abreast with the technological skills and scientific
knowledge being made available by our peers.

The last six months have witnessed immense neurosurgical activities
in the Arab world. Excellent scientific meetings have taken place
where opportunities have been provided to share in knowledge and
experience. In October last year the Pan Arab Neurosurgical Society
met in Sharm Al?Sheikh, Egypt, where Professor Sheriff Ezzat took
over the reins of the Pan Arab Society. A number of internationally
renowned neurosurgeons, including Prof. M. Samii, Prof. Hakuba and
others graced the occasion.
In the forthcoming months we will be witnessing some hectic neurosurgical
activity in our region. An important meeting is taking place under
the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies in Lahore. The Pan
Arab Society intends to be represented in maximum strength. This
will also be an opportunity to choose a representative from the
region for the world body. I will urge all our colleagues and the
member societies to put up a unanimous candidate to this world body
so that our interests are best served and success assured. Our next
Pan Arab meeting is scheduled to be held in Tunisia from the 9?12
October, 1999. This will be the Xth EANS?Pan Arab Course and I hope
that as many of you as possible will be able to attend.
I am very proud to announce that Prof. Rudolf Fahlbusch of the Neurosurgical
Clinic, Nuremburg University, Germany has also kindly agreed to
join us as a member of our esteemed International Advisory Board.
I genuinely thank him and the other members of the Advisory Board,
for their endorsement and interest. I am also once again thankful
to all my colleagues and friends for their continuing support and,
of course, our authors and readers for their ongoing contribution
in forwarding us their articles for publication.
